} | The Complete Famous Artist Course (1960) |
Update – January 11th, 2009
The FAC Course PDFs have been removed from my servers at the request of the Famous Artist School. I have been informed that a new digital version of the course is in the works and is almost ready. After asking for more information on this new course so that I could promote it, I received this statement from the Famous Artist School:
The new Famous Artists Creative Art Course will incorporate the classic instructional materials from earlier editions of the FA Course, with additional demonstrations and examples from master artists, lots of color, and updated references. This reorganized version will consist of ten Foundations chapters and Assignments, which all students will take; followed by a choice of three electives: Painting, Illustration, and Design. These electives, with fourteen Assignments each, allow students to follow their own special art interest after having received a solid grounding in the basic foundations of art.The Creative Art Course will be available for download and on DVDs. We will continue to handle the Assignments in physical rather than virtual form, however. That is to say, students will complete the Assignments and mail them to FAS. Their individual artist/instructor will give hands-on personal attention to each lesson, creating overlays showing changes and improvements, and writing a comprehensive letter of explanation, all of which will be returned to the student along with the Assignment. Digital images of the original Assignment and the corrections are made by FAS and kept in a portfolio which can be requested by the student at any time.
The following is the original post

The Famous Artist Course I am sharing with you today is the Commercial Art & Illustration course from 1960. The Famous Artist School, founded in 1948 by Al Dorne and Normal Rockwell, released updated editions of this course and other courses (Painting, Cartooning, etc) over the years. There are three other versions of this course that I’m aware of: a 1955, 1964, and 1967 edition, though I am sure there are many more than that. Over the years they changed the order of the lessons, added and removed lessons, and changed the format of the course from 3-4 binders. Serious enthusiasts should think about getting as many editions as you can, but for the struggling artist, they share most of the same information from course to course. And for that matter, a lot of the material from this Illustration course was used in the Painting course. Which makes this a tremendous resource to artists around the world that I am happy to share. Thank you to my friends in Brazil for convincing me to do this.
The Famous Artist Courses can be tough to track down, with eBay being your best bet. Walt Reed’s book, The Figure, contains a lot of the same material from the Figure Drawing sections of the Famous Artist Course. It is still in print today, and can be found on Amazon for less than $15.
Here’s some interesting information from Wikipedia:
For the founding faculty, Dorne recruited John Atherton, Austin Briggs, Stevan Dohanos, Robert Fawcett, Peter Helck, Fred Ludekens, Ben Stahl, Al Parker, Norman Rockwell, Harold von Schmidt and Jon Whitcomb. All were making more than US$50,000 a year at the time, roughly equivalent to US$425,000 in 2006. Later faculty included cartoonists Al Capp, Milt Caniff and Rube Goldberg. Advisory faculty for the school later included Stuart Davis, Ben Shahn, Fletcher Martin, Ernest Fiene, Arnold Blanch and Doris Lee.
I took the liberty of tracking down some art from the instructors that wrote this 1960 edition because it’s good to get a feel for who your teachers are.
So without further adieu, here are the PDFs. I have uploaded them as individual chapters for convenient downloading. It’s not one PDF like I said before, but it’s all here! Please note that there is a good number of pages with a small warping effect in the top half -inch. This is a result of the ADF feature of my scanner, and varies depending on the resolution the documents were scanned in at. I’m a busy guy, and this is the best I could do for you. It won’t affect your ability to use the course, so please be understanding. You wouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth, would you?
Thank you all for your patience. Now enjoy the course!

Hi Daniel, thanks so much for posting these. I know what it’s like to not have comments on your blog, so here’s one
I’m a self taught animator so resources like these are incredibly useful to me, if not vital. I hope you continue to help out people like me with things like this in future, and I’m very grateful for what you have shared so far
Cheers

Since 1966 (born in 1953), in Belgium FAC made publicity in one of best comics magazine “Spirou”.
Some superb (small) samples were shown and I was dreaming by seeing great artists giving her knowledge through FAC.
I am professional now, I did some work for “Spirou” and finally today – thanks to you – I read finally these courses !
Woaw !

Hey Daniel,
These lessons are just like opening a true treasure chest.
We can really appreciate the value of the content, not the appearance.
Thank you for all the patience you had in scanning these.
I Know it is was very hard work and time consuming, but be sure that you effort will have tremendous influence in our lives and work here in Brazil.

What can I say? … Words fail me.
Often I will find an art bargain online and then the cost of international postage pushes it up to the prohibitive category and I miss out on another treasure.
Sincere thanks for sharing this treasure.

Hey Daniel!
Just wanted to let you know how thankful I am that you took the time to scan and share this treasure!
I recently found out about the famous artist course and have wanted to study from them, but they were just too expensive to purchase. I know they will help me become a better artist with a lot of hard work and study.
I look forward to buying my own copy of the course once I make a career out of my art.
Thank you once again

man that’s alot of pdfs. I gotta say man, it’s very awesome of you to do this and I’m not alone when I say “thanks a ton!”
With comicrazys, the animation archive, mark kennedy & johnK’s blogs, and now your Famous Artists Course upload, now is the time for all aspiring artists to do their thing – and regardless of how many people leave comments, just know that many will hear of this and check it out =)
thanks again man!

These are great. I was wondering, I was planning on applying to CalArts this year, but decided to wait a year and really try to improve my drawing ability. I know that you’ve had to defer for another year, what do you suggest I be doing during that time?
Saturday, October 17, 2009, 7 29:am GMT+7
Dan
I’m glad it’s reaching a lot of people after only one day online. It’s also nice to see who’s out there rather than just seeing a number in a “page views” column.
You guys are all very welcome!
@Robert: Well the obvious answer is to just draw all the time. But I would also suggest you think seriously about whether it’s the next step for you personally. It’s easy to want to go there because everyone does, and you hear everyone ends up working at Disney. But as I dug deeper I realized that was only the surface. After going there, and meeting current and past students, I realized there are a lot of people there that don’t like it, and there are a lot of people that finished the course and have nothing but bitterness towards it. So it depends on the kind of person you are and whether you think you can do it yourself. I’m starting to lean that way as I’m realizing what I’m capable of. But I still really want to be a part of that environment. Personally, my goal is to make Cartoon College and work on a reel of my own in the next year. When CalArts comes creeping back to the forefront, I’ll be in a better position to make a decision based on what I’ve accomplished.

Dear Daniel,
Thank you for posting the course in the internet. I had been waiting for this dream to come true for over 40 years: to be able to have this course.
Your attitude will change the concept of art. Many will have the oportunity to have access to this real treasure and will be able to use it in a way they will enrich the art envisioned by the Famous Artists. Thank you in the name of those who love art, specially the ones in Brazil. Best regards, Francisco Lopes – kiko.

Wow, after all these years. I’ve he Walt Reed book, including his excellent 197os book or Von Schmidt. And the FAS Red books with their own tracing paper, but never the ringed binders. Sure, I saw them on ebay OCCASIONALLY,
, but living out in the Atlantic, well, it wasn’t easy to think of shipping – plus the whole – ‘putting out comics’ expenses
Said expenses with be greatly balanced what with the perfect tools to brush up my own skills and be put to work by the Big G, on ‘Contract’.

Daniel,
I was just directed to your blog from another site. I have wanted my own copy of the Famous Artists School books for years. They are one of the most amazing resources for aspiring representational image makers ever put together. The fact that you have gone to the effort of making these available to all of us, is nothing short of amazing.
Thank you for the inspiration. I hope that your hard work presents itself through my work.

I am amazed by the shear volume of information that these pdfs contain. For any art student, no matter the career path, this is a MUST for their library!
I must thank you for being so generous as to host these articles of artistry’s past.

Thanks so much for posting this! I remember my illustration professor talking about these courses when I attended Ringling and what a great resource they were and he even had a set of the books. This is such a blessing to be able to have access to all of this material. As a child, about 35 years ago, I sent in one of the tests to get more info. It was reviewed and sent back to me with more information. My family could not afford the program, so I put it to rest. Here I am, 37 years later, a student at Academy of Art in San Francisco. It’s like I never missed a beat, and finally I can self study this valuable course, taught by some of the masters of that era. Thank you so much!

Daniel, your efforts will be appreciated far beyond this blog. I was referred here by another blogger and certainly the word goes out like the jungle drums.
I am an art student in a country with no art schools, only conceptual thinking “art” schools so I’ve had to resource my schooling and art lessons from elsewhere on the net. All the resources for learning art I can get are true treasures in gold and diamonds for me which are the fuel for my journey and to get me forward in learning.
It wasn’t later than last week when I found out about this course while listening to interview from Bernie Wrightson I believe.
I started frantically searching more information about it, reading what I could with my jaw on the ground and stars replacing my out popped eyeballs. The more I found the more convinced I became that this collection of information had to be the long forgotten treasure which I got to dig out but couldn’t open. Right there in front of my eyes.
Once again ebay slapped the cold price tag on my star struck face like good size salmon.
Perhaps next Christmas.
Well next Christmas came a bit earlier than I expected:)
I have the utmost respect and appreciation for you taking time off your busy schedule and scanning this for the art community. Such efforts will be heard I have no doubt about it.
Thank you Daniel.
Needless to say this will go into the pdf collection with the Loomis books and will come very handy.
All the best Daniel.
Sincerely,
Jussi

Hello Daniel,
Thanks a lot for this! I am a stay at home mummy for my 1.5 year old boy and have not had time to do art in a long while (kids are so demanding time wise!). But this will be a great starting point to get back to some art! Refresh the knowledge and so on!
Greatly appreciate this!
Thanks again,

Dan,
I think this is the best resource on storytelling art that there is, with Andrew Loomis’s Creative Illustration being a close second. I borrowed a set of the master courses by Parker and Dorne and the others from a friend of mine and made photocopies and studied them endlessly. The stuff on composition is especially great. And you can’t beat Dorne’s hand drawings!

It would have been a worthy post just to point out the existance of these books. To put the time in that you did so you could share is beyond the call. Thank you for your effort. I look forward to reading through your pdf’s when I have the time to fully appreciate them. Also when I get the chance, I will post a link to your site for others to check out. Your effort does not go unrecognized and thanks to you, neither does the original artists.

Hi Dan.
Back when I was a kid, my best friend’s father had these books. He noticed me drawing and encouraged me. He gave me one book at a time to study and he checked my work. This is so cool being able to see these wonderful books again. Thanks so much!

Daniel,
I was just directed to your blog from another site. Not being from the US, I have just discovered about these books, and they seem to be as much of a well-kept treasue as the Loomis books.
I am currently downloading the first chapter. Thank you so much for going though the trouble of scanning all the books, that must have been quite the chore (I hate scanning!).
I will put all the precious information found there into my work
Thanks again, this is huge!
best regards,
Jeremy

After downloading the whole series and reading your post, I’ve decided to comment not to throw my hat in for a hard copy, but just so you’ll be more inclined to do something like this again. Just remember that although a lot of people take what’s offered without a comment, doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t grateful or unappreciative.
Thanks for the effort! I’m looking forward to using these.

Thank you so much for sharing these books. As an illustration instructor I’ve been looking for complete versions of these manuals for years. The best I could offer my students have been pieces, and sometimes my students would find missing parts to share with me
These manuals will be put back into practice as they were meant to be.

Daniel,
WOW! Thank you so much for posting these. I sure hope the binding held up to all the scanning! The knowledge contained in these volumes is timeless for any image maker! With so much of today’s work seemingly relying on the next software plug-in or more sensitive touch screen it’s good to keep in mind that technology does not replace the fundamentals.
I hope other students and budding professionals learn to take in not only the contemporary images, but the image makers that influence the present.
Thanks again!

I was just talking to my friend last week about, creating an online study course, that teaches the traditional artist skills. You get stuck without these only doing what you know how to do in illustrator or photoshop vs. what your imagination can come up with. Truly this stuff is becoming a lost art.

Well i dont know if you devaluate anything, or if sharing information you highlight something more valuable than money.
I do thank you a lot, and will share what i learn with my students.
Hoping they will contribute to build better pictures, better art for a better (whatever you want).
With all my respect.

Hi Dan
Thanks for scanning these- it is such a great resource. i have the 1967 edition of the books but it is very cool to see the 1960 edition too. they changed a lot it appears in the 67 edtion.
I though you and your readers would like to know that more FAC material is available out there:
the Famous artist cartoon course is almost totally available (they are still scanning it.)
http://comicrazys.com/category/famous-artists-cartoon-course/
and i scanned in and sent the chapter from the ‘67 edition of Bernie Fuchs to Lief at today’s inspiration blog
http://todaysinspiration.blogspot.com/search?q=fuchs+famous+artist
enjoy
Matt
p.s. I also sent him the Bob Peak chapter so keep your eyes out for that.
and if you want pdfs of those scans for your blog let me know. i would be happy to share

I applied to the Famous Artists School at age 15. A representative came to our house to talk with me and my parents, and he said I was too young to take the course because I “probably wouldn’t apply myself”. WTF?

There is a funny story about these I’ll share. My mother ordered this course and did it at home as a teenager. I would go over these and draw from them. I got an F in art class for drawing a horse from the book in full gallop. The teacher said that horses NEVER were in that position.. I took the book to her, which she never returned.
So I’m grateful to have these.
Thanks.

The Famous Artists Courses have ALWAYS been available and has never been out of copyright or out of print. You can buy their courses here: http://www.famous-artists-school.com. The course you reference is a NEW edition not yet published which will be available to download.
It doesn’t appear that you tried very hard to determine if the FAS course is in the public domain (it’s not) — but you must know on some level that you are offering stolen property since I noticed that you took your donation button down. FAS has been on the web for many years and is very easy to find.
Disclosure: I am the FAS webmaster and website developer. The FAS owners are well aware of your theft and have been trying to contact you. Others in the community are also aware of your theft and have a lot to say about it: Today’s Inspiration entry on your theft.

Sorry Linton, but the course is no longer available though my site. It was available for quite some time, but you just missed out. I’m sure you can find it elsewhere. There is a copy for sale on eBay for a reasonable price.

I know it’s a bit belated to comment but I was one of the fortunate ones who managed to get the entire FAC as well as the composition book off your site.
I have one of the FACs from ebay and going over it was pure gold so I was delighted to get the rest of them in PDF format. Going over the new stuff has lit a new fire under me. Same for the composition book. The dream job is to be a full time storyboard artist and these are really helping.
I’m sorry you got in trouble, but from one artist to another, I’m incredibly grateful you posted them.
Best of luck with CalArts. I got accepted when I was 20 but couldn’t afford to go. Wound up attending Sheridan which was awesome but I have wondered how different my career would have been had I gone to CA instead. (Probably more debt! HAH!)
Again, thank you.

Sweetie, not to rain on your Famous Artist Course parade, but you need to visit this website:

LOOK for Magdalen Livesey’s comment she posted on Monday, January 04, 2010 = it’s about copyright & these books ~ it’s pretty harsh… I just wanted to save you some problems… I am in NO WAY associated with this company
