My efforts of learning how to draw extend not only to studying different techniques of actual drawing, but also literally how people draw. That is, how they hold the pencil throughout the process of drawing. Where do they grip the pencil? What angle do they hold it at? How hard are they pressing? These questions and more are ones I’ve studied Pete Emslie’s videos for the answers to. It’s just a little detail I think might improve my ability. Anything to make drawing a little easier right? And if you watch Pete’s old videos, he makes the process look exactly that, easy.
Pete’s finally got some more videos, and they are great! If you like them too, I would encourage you to let him know by commenting on his blog. It’s the only way he’ll clue in and make it a regular thing. Here’s the first part of his video. Click here to go to his blog and watch the second video.

I’ve been told I’ve hold the pencil in a very strange way, although it’s very natural to me. I don’t know how to explain it, but a very big problem in the way I hold it is that my finger nails press against the palm of my hand, so I actually get hurt if I draw or write for too long
I’ve tried several other methods to hold the pencil, but I always go back to my weird way.

Well that’s part of the reason why I like to see how other people do it. I find I have my own weird way that ends up gauging a massive dent in my index finger if I draw too much. Can be painful…especially if you take a break from drawing, and want to use the computer and you have A STYLUS!

Hey Dan,
Great posts. I can’t remember how I found your site but it’s one of my favorites. I look forward to your updates. Informative and inspirational. I’m now on the list to take Jean_denis’ online animation course which I wouldn’t have known about it.
thanks

Hi,
I was just wondering… I’ve been looking for a pencil like that for ages, the ones I find keep not being the right ones… Do you know which pencil it is?
Thanks!!

Hi Sjoerd. Unfortunately I do not know what pencils he is using. You should click the link to his blog, and ask him. I’d also be curious to know that.
